There’re 10 things you can start doing today…
1 PRAY FOR YOUR SONS & PRAY WITH THEM
As a dad, you don’t just pray for your sons but let them see you doing it, too. You want your sons to know you’re a man of prayer and a believer in God. You want them to know that even a strong man still needs guidance from his Father. If you’re having a hard time of what to say for your prayers, you can try saying the prayers in Warrior Prayers. God needs nothing eloquent to hear and help you, so all you need is to be real and be your genuine self when praying to get His attention.
2 READ YOUR BIBLE
Similar to praying, when you read the Bible, you want to let them see and read the Bible with you also. Share with your sons the Word of God, what they mean and how to apply them in real life. Sons oftentimes look up and identify to their dads the most, so you should take all the chances you have to show to them you’re the man that’s worth following.
3 LOVE AND RESPECT YOUR SONS’ MOM
Show your sons that the woman who helps you bring them into this world is important and that they should respect her, doesn’t matter what. Teach them how to love and respect their mother by the way you treat their mother with love and respect. Even if you’re divorced, grace and forgiveness will teach your sons how to treat a woman right and respect their mother especially.
4 LEAD YOUR FAMILY WELL
Prioritize your family’s needs over yours. It doesn’t mean that you give them anything and everything they want, but it means that you’re willing to sacrifice to give what they need. This will teach your sons how to serve others by showing them how you serve them.
5 PLAY WITH YOUR SONS
Having fun sounds easy but sometimes it’s hard with your busy schedule. But, try to teach your sons to have fun with you and their mom. When your sons have a fun and great childhood full of memories of you and them spending time together, you’d be surprised that this will help them in the future when they grow up and deal with “fun” but harmful temptations.
6 DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU’RE GOING TO DO
Integrity is key here. Show your sons that you’re an honest and truthful man both at home and in public. This will teach them about work ethics and that if they want something, they should work hard for it.
7 HELP YOUR SONS SET THEIR LIFE GOALS
Things often don’t go as planned, but dreaming with your sons about the plans God has in store for them can help them set goals for their life. You can do this by telling them stories about men of integrity and faith, and men who stood up and spoke up for what they believed in. Guide them to work toward their goals for their personal growth and careers.
8 ASK YOUR SONS FOR FORGIVENESS
Nobody is perfect, everyone makes mistakes. But, it’s important that you show your sons how to be humble. Teach them this by admitting the mistake you’ve made to your sons and ask them to forgive you. And, don’t wait until they ask you to do so. You should sincerely sorry and ask them for forgiveness before they reach out to you.
9 GUARD YOUR EYES
If you’re a single dad, you shouldn’t show your sons if you lust after another woman. Teach them how to respect women and be committed to one woman in their lives. And, if you bring any women into your sons’ lives, remember to always respect them.
10 BE YOUR SONS’ HERO
Prove to your sons that you’re worth their love and devotion. As a dad and a good man, you want to protect your family, cherish them and save the day. You should live your life in a way that your sons wish they could be exactly like you or even half as good as you when they grow up. Do these things for your sons. The choice is yours to make, so make them worth the love and respect of your sons.
